SEO

In this week's lesson we give you the low down on Search Engine Optimization and the industry tips and tricks. Search Engine Optimization or SEO is one of the most important online marketing tactics that you can undertake.

As a general rule there are three methods of marketing online:

  • Pay Per Click Advertising
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Aggregate Marketing

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the art of convincing Google and other search engines that your site is relevant for your chosen keywords. The first thing you will need to achieve SEO greatness is a well-designed website that is Search Engine friendly.

Google and the other search engines want to serve up the most relevant results for the terms searched.   This means that sites must actually be relevant to the search terms.

Over the last year the most common question we are asked is about Search Engine Optimization and why a website's rankings are slipping. In a nutshell if the site is well optimized technically the answer is one word: CONTENT!

Gone are the days of old when it was a matter of stuffing a page full of keywords building a couple of links to the page and having Google rank your website well.

These days it's all about the quality, length and relevance of your content that affects your ranking. At the end of the day Google and the other search engines are aiming to deliver the most relevant search results and exclude pages which are not of high quality or relevance to the topic. So what does this actually mean?

Quality Content on ever page

Well the first thing is every page of your site needs to have quality content on every page and lots of it too. If you have an ecommerce website with 100 products and only 50 of them have descriptive unique content this will bring your overall rankings down.

Every page regardless of whether it is product page or an article page must have content. If it doesn't then you either need to hurry up and write some content or remove the page from being indexed until it does have content.

The content needs to be relevant and make sense

Back in the bad old days of SEO you could have almost any content on a page and so long as your headings and page titles were relevant the page would be ranked highly. Now the content has to be relevant and grammatically correct as well.

Enough Words per page

How long is a piece of string? 200 words? 500 words? 1000 words minimum per page? There is no hard and fast rule but the more content per page the better.

SEO Landing Pages

Whilst farms of SEO landing pages where people try to target every single keyword or key phrases with an individual page may be passe if they are content less they are still fantastic ways of targeting keywords if they have unique content. But unique content is around 500 to 100 words of totally unique content.

Take a look at the way Urban Flower is targeting locations that they deliver to by building landing pages with loads of relevant content for the Sydney suburb of Abbotsford.

Create a Content Strategy

You create a content strategy that outlines what your targeted keywords are and then a list of pages of your site in order of priority to have the content written. You do this by:

  1. Analyzing the search volumes of the keywords you want to target, there is absolutely no use in targeting keywords that no one searches for.
  2. Analyze your website analytics and looks at the most popular pages on your website and prioritize these pages to have quality content written first.
  3. Prioritize your Homepage, product category Pages, Services pages highly and then list the most popular to least popular pages (if you are trying to target a specific product and or page you need to prioritize this more highly)
  4. Write the content and have the keywords you are targeting in the headings, dot points, bolded content and links between pages.

It's not always practical to write all the content yourself, and sometimes it's better that you don't try writing it yourself especially if you are not a natural writer.

Outsource the Content Writing

If you have 100 pages and you need 500 words on each that's approximately 50,000 words to be written! The best way is to outsource this as a job lot with your Content strategy as the brief, and you would expect to pay around $2000 - $3000 for this to be written.

Of course if these were product pages you could go for 250 words per product and get more content.
