AU Domain Names & Social Media Security

There has been quite a bit of discussion about the new .au domain names and whether you should register one.

From March 2022 for 6 months if you own a .com.au domain name you will be given priority to register the .au version.

The short answer is YES you should register the .au version of your domain name.

Why should I register this domain?

Mainly to stop someone else from registering the domain name.

Should I change the domain name of my website?

At this stage we are not recommending you change the domain name of your website as there are potential SEO impacts.

How do I register the updated domain name?

You can request the domain name be registered through us, or you can register it yourself or the company that currently manages your domain name.

Keeping your social media accounts secure

There has been a recent increase in the number of florists having their Instagram and Facebook accounts hacked.

The most common way that people hack into these accounts is by sending emails pretending to be Instagram / facebook with links to appeal an issue.  These are called “phishing attacks” and they are very common.

You might get an email from Instagram saying your account will be deactivated, or your account needs updating.

NEVER CLICK ON THESE EMAILS

If you are unsure log into the Instagram / facebook and check the inbox.  They will always send you a DM using their own platform if there is an issue.

Scam Emails to Messenger and DM's

Sometimes as has been reported people also send DM's to your accounts purporting to be the main account asking for more information or even urporting to be someone they know.  As a general rule if a message asks you to login or click on a link and login or approve something, DON"T it is mroe likeoy to be a scam than not a scam.

There are some basic things you can do to protect your account.

1)    Use Strong Password and change it regularly

Make sure the password for your Instagram and Facebook accounts are strong, use Upper and lower case letters, numbers special characters.

Make sure you change your passwords regularly and don’t use the same password on multiple accounts.

2)    Never follow links on your email or DM

Hackers can create emails & DM's that look extremely professional, if you get an unusual email do not click on the links, instead go to the normal website / app and login as normal and check the inbox.

Even if you think the email is real, or it looks to be from someone you trust always be vigilant

3)    Use 2 Factor Authentication

If it’s available always use 2 Factor authentication whether it be to your email address, an app or SMS.  If it’s available turn it on!
