Geo-targeting SEO For Florists

As competition for the ever elusive search engine rankings gets more and more competitive Geo-targeting or Location Based Search comes in.

One of the most effective SEO techniques for florists is to target their local delivery areas with SEO Suburb Landing Pages which we’ve discussed before in this article.  These is really just Geo-targeting with another name.

What is Geo-Targeting?

Geo-Targeting is the activity of delivery content to a user based on the location they are OR in the case of floristry customers where they WANT to have their order delivered too.

Traditionally Geo-targeting is more targeted to say people looking for a local business or service provider. For example if you are looking for a plumber Google might use your actual location to show you the results of plumbers near you.

Florist Geo-Targeting

Customers searching for flowers however are not necessarily in the same location as the person they want to deliver to, so they use different search phrases.  For example, if they want to send flowers to Surry Hills they may use the search terms:

  • Surry Hills Flowers Delivered
  • Surry Hills Florist
  • Cheap Flowers Surry Hills

Or any combination of the location Surry Hills and words relating to their need for flowers.

What can florists do to Geo-target?

We have already talked about optimizing your web page for suburb based location searches in past

But what else can you do pick up these local search based key phrases?

Well I’m glad you asked because there is a lot more!

To start with people search for more than just the suburb name they can be even more specific that that and here is where your real long tail SEO strategy starts to come into play.  They search for many things:

  • The Post Code
  • Hospitals
  • Nursing Homes
  • Schools
  • Names of Buildings
  • Well known streets in the area
  • Landmarks in the Area
  • Popular venues or tourist destinations

I would recommend that you create a specific page for each of the following in your local delivery area with good quality text:

  • Hospitals
  • Nursing Homes
  • Schools

For example in Surry Hills where we are located we have the following:

  • Crown Street Public School
  • St Vincent’s Hospital
  • St Vincent’s Private Hospital
  • Crown Street Primary School
  • The Sister Anne Court Aged Care
  • Gertrude Abbott Nursing Home

Some quick google searches later and I can find a handful of florists who have included some of these locations on their website!

If you have already created SEO Suburb Landing Pages and these are listed you should link to the new pages from the existing content.

You could also list these in your delivery information pages and link to them for example some words such as:

We deliver to the following hospitals: …

Secondary Geo-targeting for Landmarks, Streets, Postcodes etc

Generally speaking the additional local search terms such as:

  • Names of Buildings
  • Well known streets in the area
  • Landmarks in the Area
  • Popular venues or tourist destinations

Are more of a secondary search and instead of creating individual pages for each of these, they should be mentioned in the content of the SEO Suburb Landing Pages.  You can work out the popularity of these as delivery locations by analyzing your own orders.

If they are popular delivery locations then maybe do them as a separate page, but otherwise you can include them in your content and highlight them as a heading, italicized or in “bold”.  As these all add weight to the word for the search engines.

Make Sure you are Listed Google My Business

Another very important tactic to make sure you are optimized in local search your Google My Business Listing.
