Phasing out mobile interfaces in favour of Responsive Website Design
A major trend in the last few years has seen the move away from a separate cut down version of your site for mobile devices to responsive design. This means that we design one version of your entire website and then it scales down to suite each of the screen sizes for mobile, tablet and desktop screens.
It's infinitely better for things like usability where a person finds a deep linked page of your and can view that page on any device instead of being given a mobile only or a desktop only site. Some of the benefits of responsive design include:
- Better for SEO with less chances of Google penalizing you for duplicate content.
- And it's better for you because you only ever have to manage one set of content for your website and mobile enabled website.
Google is rolling out Mobile Friendly Icons on Search Results
Google is trialling two new icons on mobile search results, the first will show that a website is mobile friendly with the Green icon above. The second Icon will be a grey mobile icon to signify that a website is not mobile friendly. This is a significant factor you should consider in moving forward to a Responsive Design as Google recommends against having a secondary mobile website for SEO reasons.
All new customers will be on the new platform
Moving forward we will be phasing our mobile interface and only doing new sites and upgrades with responsive design. If you use the mobile interface that's fine and it will continue to work perfectly but you should start to think about moving yourself to responsive design. We've also updated our iPhone and iPad Application framework which is even better than before but we will tell you more about them another time.
Responsive Design Framework
We are also adopting the industry standard for providing responsiveness on your website by using the bootstrap industry standard JS and CSS frameworks. This means it will be easier for us to keep up with new browsers and new features that are enabled in the browsers, which means more features for you and your website. IT will also mean that when new browsers break things we will be able to quickly address them for you.
